Tropical Cyclone Alfred Emergency Response

In March 2025, Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred impacted south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales, bringing destructive winds, widespread tree failures, flooding, road closures and significant damage to residential properties. The event affected communities from the Northern Rivers region through to Brisbane, with prolonged heavy rainfall and flooding continuing well after the cyclone crossed the coast. TLC Trees was engaged by multiple insurance companies and insurance builders to assist with emergency response and make-safe operations across the affected region.

Job Type

Tropical Cyclone Alfred Emergency Response

Property Type

More Than 20 Residential Properties

Our Response

Our deployment covered a large operational area extending from Byron Bay to Brisbane, where our crews attended more than 20 residential properties requiring emergency tree works.

  • Emergency tree make-safe works
  • Removal of failed and structurally compromised trees
  • Removal of hazardous hanging limbs
  • Safe access restoration to homes and properties
  • Site clearance to enable insurance repairs
  • Coordination with insurers, builders and homeowners throughout the recovery process

Operational Challenges

Cyclone response required flexibility, planning and continual communication.

  • Flooded roads and changing access conditions
  • Road closures across multiple regions
  • Persistent heavy rainfall
  • High summer temperatures and humidity
  • Long-distance travel between job sites
  • Extended periods working away from home
  • Power line damage – coordination with power authorities and electricians for safety and repair purposes

As operations continued over several days, some team members returned home to meet personal commitments while others remained deployed, transporting equipment across Queensland and New South Wales to maintain response capability.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge
How We Solved It
Flooded roads, road closures and constantly changing site access across Queensland and New South Wales
  • Planned daily deployment routes, adjusted schedules as conditions changed, and maintained communication between crews to keep emergency works progressing safely.
Multiple high-priority emergency jobs across a large geographical area
  • Coordinated crews, equipment and resources efficiently to respond to more than 20 residential properties while maintaining rapid response times.
Damaged power infrastructure creating additional safety risks
  • Worked closely with power authorities, electricians, insurance companies and builders to ensure each site was made safe before commencing tree works.
Ongoing heavy rainfall, high temperatures and extended deployments
  • Rotated personnel, transported equipment between regions and adapted workforce planning to maintain safe, reliable operations throughout the recovery effort.
Homeowners requiring urgent access to damaged properties
  • Prioritised hazard removal, restored safe access and completed site clearance to allow insurance assessments and building repairs to begin as quickly as possible.
Large volumes of storm debris generated during emergency works
  • Recycled mulch and reusable timber where practical, supplying materials back to local property owners to reduce waste and support community recovery.

Sustainable Recovery

Where practical, timber and mulch generated during emergency works were recycled within local communities rather than being disposed of. Mulch and reusable timber were supplied to local property owners who wished to retain these materials, reducing waste while supporting the recovery of affected landscapes.

Experience That Matters

While the arboricultural principles remain the same, emergency response places greater demands on communication, coordination and decision-making. Cyclone Alfred required our team to work within a complex environment involving homeowners, insurance
companies, builders, electricians, power authorities and local communities—often while access conditions, weather and priorities changed daily.

• Clear and empathetic communication with homeowners experiencing significant property damage.
• Coordination between multiple stakeholders to ensure works aligned with insurance assessments,
builder requirements and utility providers.
• Dynamic planning and logistics across a large geographical area as road closures, flooding and site
conditions evolved.
• Rapid risk assessment and prioritisation to safely restore access and remove immediate hazards.
• Maintaining consistent safety, quality and professionalism despite extended deployments, challenging
environmental conditions and changing operational demands.

These capabilities underpin every project we undertake. Whether responding to a natural disaster or
delivering planned arboricultural works, our focus remains the same: safe outcomes, effective
communication and reliable service for every client.

Customer Feedback

The homeowner was relieved to have the dangerous tree removed before storm season and appreciated the tidy work and professional safety management.
I would highly recommend Tom and his crew, they were so professional, courteous and friendly. Nothing was to much trouble for them. Their safety standards are fantastic and the way they operate and looked after our property was absolutely outstanding. Very well organised unit. - Dave
